Horse racing season is technically year-round, but we have a ton of great races coming up on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The Triple Crown and the preceding races all feature three-year-olds. The Pegasus World Cup features horses of all ages and is the signature winter event at Gulfstream Park in Florida. This is a 1 1/8 mile race that some may remember as the Donn Handicap before it changed names four years ago.
Brian Blessing has been betting on horses for a very long time (he wouldn’t tell me exactly how long, as he didn’t want to date himself) and loves the track down at Gulfstream. With that, he put together a video for us on the Pegasus World Cup to share some of his picks and betting strategies for this race down in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
The morning line favorite Omaha Beach has been scratched, which comes as no surprise to horse players, as this is a prime example of “what could have been” with a horse that has battled so many injuries to this point. This was supposed to be Omaha Beach’s last race anyway before retiring to becoming a stud.
It isn’t just Omaha Beach that has been crossed out, though. Spun To Run has also been listed as SCR for this race. That opens up the field quite a bit. There are some recent Derby runners in this event like Bodexpress and Tax. Eight-year-old colt War Story draws Joel Rosario in the irons and Flavien Prat is riding one of the favorites in Higher Power. John Velazquez and Dallas Stewart combine for a long shot with some spunk in Seeking the Soul.
This is a race with a $3 million purse, so it is a big one and definitely a race to keep a close eye on because there will be some good betting opportunities for the main event and also on the undercard with so many world-class jockeys and trainers on hand. The weather also looks picture perfect, so we should have a fast track and a lot of thrilling racing throughout the day.
Take a look at this video preview from Brian Blessing so you can grab a winner with the 5:40 p.m. ET post time on NBC.
