, this week we had lots of action in the world of soccer and as usually we will talk about the best matches played, so let’s get started !!!
USA vs Honduras 3-1 (Gold Cup): The US played a very solid game against a Honduran squad who honestly had no answers for either Donovan or Johnson. Bedoya was great down the wing and the US back four were very solid, although they did have their lapses. Although he is very scrappy and played with veteran poise, DeMarcus Beasley is the weak link in the back four and the Hondurans tried at every opportunity to go at him. He will continue to need overlap coverage at the back and the US will continue to need to bomb forward to keep attacking sides on their back foot to avoid exposing him too often.
The referee, towards the end, lost control of the game declining to punish the Hondurans for impetuous and unnecessary fouls. This started around the 65th minute and continued through the end of the game, resulting ultimately in Klinnsmann being sent off because he rightfully lit into the referee when his player was hacked down with no call. I don’t sense that any further sanctions will be forthcoming unless the referee really has a bone to pick with Klinnsmann.
Donovan is actually looking like he is really enjoying playing now more than before. Also, because of the situation Klinnsmann has put him in, there is very little outside pressure on Landon to perform or carry the squad. By not commenting publicly, it makes Donovan’s status on the USMNT ambiguous enough that non-industry media who aren’t around the team or organization all the time are making noise about it. In truth, it takes the pressure of the other players in the squad and lowers any expectations people may have of them. I think it is why the US is playing looser and looking like they’re having fun.
Sunday’s final should be fun, particularly if Panama comes to play instead of putting 10 guys behind the ball. Even so, the US is playing with enough confidence that they’ll have opportunities to score. I just hope for an open game. Although I like US team, I am Panamenian, so of course I will prefer my team win on Sunday, but I am aware it is not going to be easy because US is playing awesome and they have a very solid team. May the beast team win!!
Mexico vs Panama 1-2 (Gold Cup): The professional thing to do here would be for Chepo to admit that he messed up big time by bringing a squad FULL on inexperienced players and to take Fabian, Montes, Layun, and Aldrete and give them a shot with the A squad. After that, take Huiqui and Rafa Marquez Lugo and ban them from wearing a Mexico shirt ever again, I’ve never seen players play worse in their positions for an international team than these two. Huiqui, about half the goals against us in this tournament were his fault. RML, didn’t have a single shot that looked to be a goal and he squandered literally 10 – 15 shots over the course of the tournament. Besides that there is really nothing to see here. Mexico lost because the team didn’t have what it takes to win, they had the opposite of star power, Panama had players who didn’t hold their own and were a burden to the rest of the team. Congrats to Panama, they beat Mexico playing good soccer, the goal keeper was excellent. Good luck in the final.
