NBC Sports Network Fight Night series returned to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at the Sands Casino featuring three fast-rising contenders on national television. The first bout of the night was between Alex Sanchez (1-1) and Fitzgerald Johnson (3-6) in the Junior Middleweight division. Sanchez made quick work of Johnson and won with a second round knockout at 2:14. The second bout was between Jerome Rodriguez (0-1) and Kywayne Hill (1-9) in the Junior Welterweight division. Rodriguez won with scores of 40-36.
During the second half of August, trainer Joe Gallagher and his group of boxers, from England, were in Hollywood, California. But they were not here to do any sightseeing. This trip was all about boxing. For two weeks, they set up shop at the world famous Wild Card Boxing Club.
In memory of Leavander Johnson who passed away on September 22, 2005, at the age of thirty-five. Johnson, a 16-year pro, collapsed after his last fight and was rushed to the hospital where he was placed in a medically-induced coma after emergency brain surgery, he never awoke and passed away five days later.
More sad news. Former heavyweight champ Corrie Sanders, 46, was shot in the hand and stomach at a family member’s 21st birthday party at the restaurant in Brits, in South Africa’s North West province, on Saturday night, police said. He died in a hospital in the capital city of Pretoria in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police said three armed men entered the restaurant with the apparent intention to rob it and shot randomly, hitting Sanders.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have agreed to settle a federal defamation case in Las Vegas, according to a lawyer involved in the case. This move avoids trial and clears a key hurdle to a long-awaited bout between two top fighters who have traded verbal jabs for years but have never met in the ring. Pacquiao, 33, a member of Congress in the Philippines, filed the lawsuit in December 2009 in Las Vegas. He sought unspecified damages based on allegations that Mayweather defamed him by suggesting he used performance-enhancing substances. Pacquiao denied Mayweather’s claim.
