Good Samaritan Retired To WinStar Farm For 2019 Breeding Season

Good Samaritan, a versatile millionaire son of Harlan's Holiday and a Grade 2 winner at two, three, and four, has been retired and will stand the 2019 breeding season at WinStar Farm. He is currently available for inspection and will stand for $12,500 S&N.

“He is the last great son of Harlan's Holiday, one of the most dominant American sire lines we have currently, and he was ultra-consistent,” said Sean Tugel, WinStar Farm's director of bloodstock services and assistant racing manager. “In this day and age of retiring horses with limited starts, he started 15 times over three years, including 14 straight graded stakes contests. As a juvenile, he was unlucky not to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf as the favorite and was only a half-length away from winning the G1 Clark Handicap against older horses as a sophomore. He offers commercial breeders excellent value as a consistent and sound stallion prospect.”

A 4 ¾-length winner of the $600,000 G2 Jim Dandy Stakes in his first start on the dirt, Good Samaritan won the G2 Summer Stakes at two on the turf and captured the $400,000 G2 New Orleans Handicap in his 4-year-old debut this year. All told, he won or placed in eight graded stakes during his racing career, making 14 consecutive graded stakes starts from 15 lifetime outings, earning $1,309,450. He defeated a total of 10 Grade 1 winners—six on dirt and four on turf—and was just shy of being a Grade 1 winner, finishing second by a half-length in the 2017 G1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs.

A homebred for WinStar Farm, Good Samaritan is out of the stakes-placed Pulpit mare Pull Dancer. This deep family, which traces back to blue hen mare La Troienne, includes stallions Sky Mesa and Bernstein, as well as champion 2-year-old filly Outstandingly.
