. This week we will be reporting on lots of action in the world of soccer and as usually we will talk about the best matches played. So let’s get started !!!
Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao 2-1 (La Liga): Well, Bilbao went for the glory by trying to play, attacking football, Barca players could play with a lot of freedom and forwards could produce chances. However, Alexis, Pedro and even Messi have been not very good finishing tap-ins and one-on-one chances. Barca got one goal by the sheer brilliance of Alves and the next one came through a Messi free kick (not a great goal but a goal nonetheless). Barca must improve finishing, to score on as many chances they will get against defensive teams, otherwise, Granada accident will occur again and again.
Alexis, Pedro and Messi is a dangerous combination, Alexis always deserved a chance this season. It is really unfortunate that he got it at the expense of Neymars injury. Messi should have scored a couple if Mascherano would not have done that stunt of shooting the ball into crowd but rather passing it to Messi. Overall a seriously better Barcelona performance compared to last week.
Batra is getting strong experience to start the matches. The goal was Bartra’s fault, but Alves and Song contribute nothing defensively, and if they had, the goal could have possibly been avoided. Bartra and Mascherano were relatively solid aside from that. Cesc came in and did a whole lot of nothing, as he usually does. Iniesta were brilliant. Adriano, unfortunately, isn’t Alba.
I do not think the Song performance was all that bad, I think he actually played well. He challenged for the header for their goal and after that the defense let him down. Alves practically opened a space for the striker to shoot and Pinto was always shaky but did just enough. He is supposed to be a defensive midfielder and the whole team is terrible at the moment; in terms of winning the ball back and closing the space, when under pressure from the counter. It makes him look out of place or mispositioned. He is a good player and I like that he seems to be the only player who looks for Messi with his passes as much as possible. He gives him priority because he knows that Messi is the key for Barcelona getting chances to score. Of course, he can improve but he was not by any means worse than the rest.
AC Milan vs Livorno 3-0 (Serie A): Good to see the AC Milan do what they should have done against a side like livorno. Balotelli was fantastic in this game. He was the best player on the field by far. He showed his finishing with his goal and a great link up play for both of the next couple of goals. He lost most of his dribbles and gave the ball away a few too many times. But his contributions are the reason for the scoreline. Great game for him. Great game for Taarabt as well. Taarabt has been great so far and has also made Milan a lot more exciting to watch. Showing how much flair he can produce, both on the right, through the middle, and the left. He won’t have to be dropped or shuffled at all when El Shaarawy comes back. I am looking forward to it.
Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich 1-0 (Champion’s League): What a fantastic performance by Madrid, defensively. That is what defensive, counter-attacking football should look like. A beauty to watch. Luka Modric MOTM. My goodness, this guy is the best CM in the world right now. Absolutely a world class performance from him. Glad to see Xabi Alonso bouncing back, he was great as well. Real Madrid defense was solid enough to stop most Bayern’s attacks. Pepe and Ramos were rocks, Carvajal and Coentrao defended Ribery/Robben really well. Just a great game overall for their midfield and defense. Ronaldo should have put away more chances but that is expected.
Ancelotti got it perfect tonight. His defense was well organized and disciplined and seemed to just repel every corner or cross that came their way, which is pretty impressive considering Bayern created a few mismatches in the box at times, i.e. Alonso vs Dante. Pepe, in particular, (apart from all his diving antics) was a beast in this game. Carvajal definitely came of age, such a stellar performance against Ribery and the double teaming of Robben from Coentrão and Isco was fantastic. Modric and Alonso were spectacular defensively and offensively, no one seems to be able to shake Modric , he just turns people in and out. And finally the lightening counters were just too much for Bayern too deal with!
